The nutrition of our patients as they battle cancer is so important that we created our own garden at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The St. Jude garden provides fresh vegetables grown on campus using organic practices to Kay Kafe — the hospital cafeteria where patients and families eat free of charge — thanks to friends like you.

We hope that this garden, which provides veggies such as carrots, celery and lettuce, will result in improved nutrition for our children by reducing the time from garden to plate. This also means that more of your support goes to our lifesaving research and treatment because we can reduce the amount of produce we must purchase from outside suppliers.

First steps

Phoebe hadn't been able to do many things before coming to St. Jude. Now, St. Jude doctors are giving her the chance to experience those special moments.

When 14-month-old Phoebe arrived at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in October 2011, there were many things she had never done: She had never been to day care or the park or the zoo. Phoebe had never run through the grass with her older sister, Mae, and she had never been to the grocery store. Phoebe had also never enjoyed food; instead, her nutritional needs were met through a nasogastric (NG) tube that sent food directly to her stomach.

Phoebe had spent most of her life in hospitals.

At just 9 weeks old, Phoebe was found to suffer from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Although ALL has a survival rate of 94 percent, Phoebe’s parents, Jenny and Jon, clung desperately to hope, because infant ALL is often a more deadly form of leukemia. She underwent treatment, including a bone marrow transplant, in Canada, her family’s home.

When Phoebe relapsed just 76 days post-transplant, her family was devastated. Phoebe’s doctors told Jenny and Jon to take her home, that there was likely nothing more to be done.

“That wasn’t an option for us,” said Jenny. “You don’t go from fighting something like this to giving up.” Instead, they turned to St. Jude. Within days, she and her family had arrived in the United States.

At St. Jude, Phoebe underwent a natural killer (NK) cell transplant in December 2011. NK cells are special cells in the immune system that target cancer cells.

“Traditional treatment hadn’t worked,” said Jenny, who served as her daughter’s NK cell donor. “We knew we needed something more.”

Within weeks of her transplant, Phoebe was in complete remission.

Phoebe’s treatment has also included physical and occupational therapies. “Before we came to St. Jude, Phoebe wouldn’t stand on her own, and now she’s standing,” said Jenny. “She basically had an NG tube her entire life. Now she doesn’t. She’s eating, she’s talking. Here at St. Jude, it’s about treating the whole child. It’s amazing.”

On a recent afternoon, Jenny and Jon watched Phoebe and her older sister, Mae, color. Free of her NG tube, Phoebe took a handful of orange, animal-shaped crackers, lined them up carefully on the coffee table in front of her, and ate the crackers one-by-one. By the time she was finished, orange cracker crumbs littered the front of Phoebe’s shirt and the floor beneath her. There were crumbs in her hair and on Mae’s artwork.

Jenny and John love these normal moments.

“We’re looking forward to being at home and doing every day family things, like bike rides and picnics,” Jenny said.

This past weekend, Phoebe experienced another first, a moment her mother treasures. Phoebe and Mae participated in an Easter egg hunt with other patients and their siblings. “She was a natural,” Jenny said. “She didn’t hesitate at all getting in there. To see Phoebe doing something as simple as participating in an egg hunt with her sister and other kids was wonderful.”

בשעות הבוקר צפויה להגיע שיחת הטלפון המיוחלת, כשגלעד יחצה את הגבול לישראל בכרם שלום וישוחח לראשונה מזה חמש שנים וחצי עם הוריו. מיד לאחר בדיקה רפואית ראשונית, הוא יוטס לבסיס תל נוף במרכז הארץ שם יקבלו את פניו ראש הממשלה, שר הביטחון, הרמטכ"ל ובני משפחתו.

בקבלת הפנים לגלעד לא יינשאו נאומים. ראש הממשלה ימסור הודעה קצרה, שעיקרה הוא "אנו מתברכים בשובו של גלעד שליט למדינת ישראל החופשית. אצלנו לא חוגגים שחרור רוצחים". בתום בדיקות רפואיות מקיפות יוטסו בני משפחת שליט, הפעם יחד עם גלעד, למנחת תפן שבצפון ומשם ישובו הביתה, למצפה הילה.

שעות הבוקר - מיד לאחר זיהויו של גלעד במצרים, קבוצת האסירים הראשונה תשוחרר - 25 אסירות לרמאללה, ושתיים, אמנה מונה ואחלאם תמימי, יועברו למצרים יחד עם שאר האסירים המגורשים. במקביל יועבר גלעד שליט דרך מעבר כרם שלום, סמוך לנקודה שבה נחטף, לשטח ישראל ומיד ייקלט על ידי צוות מצומצם שיכלול רופא ופסיכיאטר, ומשם יילקח לבסיס צה"ל הקרוב. בשלב זה אמור דובר צה"ל להודיע: "גלעד שליט בישראל".

בבסיס צה"ל יולבש גלעד במדי צה"ל, יקבל לידיו את התיק שהכינו לו הוריו וישוחח בטלפון עם אמו ואביו, שימתינו לו באותה העת בבסיס חיל האויר בתל נוף. בשלב זה תועבר קבוצת אסירים שנייה ממחנה עופר לרמאללה.

11:00-12:00 - גלעד ימריא במסוק לבסיס חיל האוויר תל נוף במרכז הארץ, שם ילווה בירידה מהמסוק על ידי ראש הממשלה נתניהו. מיד לאחר מכן יפגוש גלעד את בני משפחתו הגרעינית המצומצמת, ואת הרמטכ"ל ושר הביטחון. לאחר ההגעה צפוי ראש הממשלה לצאת בהצהרה קצרה לתקשורת. במהלך שהותו בבסיס תל נוף יעבור גלעד בדיקות רפואיות מקיפות.

16:00-18:00 - גלעד יוטס עם משפחתו במסוק לאזור מצפה הילה, משם יועבר בשיירה משטרתית מאובטחת לביתו ביישוב, ברכב שחלונותיו כהים. במצפה הילה ימתינו להם שרשרת אנושית של השכנים, שילוו את גלעד סוף סוף הביתה.

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Steve Jobs saw the future and led the world to it. He moved technology from garages to pockets, took entertainment from discs to bytes and turned gadgets into extensions of the people who use them.

Jobs, who founded and ran Apple, told us what we needed before we wanted it.

"To some people, this is like Elvis Presley or John Lennon. It's a change in our times. It's the end of an era," said Scott Robbins, 34, a barber and an Apple fan. "It's like the end of the innovators."

Apple Mourns Loss of Co-Founder

"Steve was among the greatest of American innovators -- brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world and talented enough to do it," he said.

Jobs had battled cancer in 2004 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009 after taking a leave of absence for unspecified health problems. He took another leave of absence in January -- his third since his health problems began -- and resigned in August. Jobs became Apple's chairman and handed the CEO job over to his hand-picked successor, Tim Cook.

Outside Apple's Cupertino headquarters, three flags -- an American flag, a California state flag and an Apple flag -- were flying at half-staff late Wednesday.

"Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor." Cook wrote in an email to Apple's employees. "Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

The news Apple fans and shareholders had been dreading came the day after Apple unveiled its latest iPhone, a device that got a lukewarm reception. Perhaps, there would have been more excitement had Jobs been well enough to show it off with his trademark theatrics.

Jobs started Apple with a high school friend in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, was forced out a decade later and returned in 1997 to rescue the company. During his second stint, it grew into the most valuable technology company in the world with a market value of $351 billion. Almost all that wealth has been created since Jobs' return.

Cultivating Apple's countercultural sensibility and a minimalist design ethic, Jobs rolled out one sensational product after another, even in the face of the late-2000s recession and his own failing health.

The 2011 Fiat 500 mini-car is a three-door hatchback that mixes Italian style with a fun-to-drive personality and comes with good gas mileage as a bonus. The new 500 was introduced in Europe as a 2008 model. It quickly won rave reviews for its interior and exterior style, high level of standard features, and solid, high-quality assembly. Highlighting the international nature of the auto business, while Fiat 500 models sold in Europe are built in Poland, for the U.S. market they’ll be built in Mexico—and sold at selected Chrysler dealers.

Like the Mini Cooper it competes with, the Fiat 500 harkens back to a beloved national automotive icon from the Sixties. In this case, it’s the Fiat 500 that was built from 1957 to 1975. And like the Mini Cooper, the new model is larger, faster, far better equipped, and immeasurably safer. Another potential competitor: the Audi A1, also a three-door mini-car, that was announced early this year, although it may not be sold in the U.S. Pricing hasn’t been announced but it will likely start around $16,000 and top out several thousand dollars higher. The Fiat 500 is not, in other words, a competitor for econobox models like the Hyundai Accent or Toyota Yaris; it’s a lifestyle choice, a style accessory that also happens to be fun to drive and easy to park in tight urban areas.

The Fiat 500 will be sold in three, maybe four, versions in the U.S. The base model is the three-door hatchback, and the 500c cabriolet is the same car fitted with a cloth roll-back roof, giving open-air driving without the loss of structural rigidity that comes from a top that folds down completely. The Fiat 500 Abarth is the hot-hatch version, competing with the Mini Cooper S, courtesy of a turbocharged engine that puts out more than 130 horsepower, stiffer suspension, and 16-inch sport wheels. (There’s also an even hotter version in Europe, the SS, but it’s not clear if that one will be sold here.) Finally, a "Giardinetta" three-door wagon is said to be on the way a couple of years later. Fiat has also shown an all-electric version, the 500e, at various auto shows, but no production plans have been announced.
